Staff View on Kids Summer Programs
April 15, 2017
I’ve had the pleasure of checking in families at Little Harbor Boathouse summer program for a few summers now, and it remains the best way to begin a Monday. Every time parents drop their kids off on the first day of our camp, I hear “Wow, I wish I got to stay!” or “Hey, how come I didn’t get to do this when I was a kid?” One glance at the sun sparkling on the water and jealously ensues. Our staff comes in early every morning, chattering about new water games or paddle routes or stroke techniques. And their passion is infectious. The campers bound in, full of energy and eager to get onto the water. At the end of the week (or weeks, in many cases), I see them hugging or high-fiving their counselors good-bye. Clearly, our instructors are a big part of the experience. “Loved it so much,” said one camper, while another celebrated the “wicked awesome staff.” Some campers are life-long paddlers, while others take their maiden paddle-board voyage with us. But no matter the experience the campers begin the week with, by the end everyone is racing to the water, going over tips and tricks to move faster and turn smoother or making requests for their favorite kayak or SUP games. Tobey Solomon-Auger, a veteran counselor, said “Being a program leader is the highlight of my summer, I love seeing how much more comfortable each kid becomes throughout the week both within the group and on the water.” Some kids love it so much they stay all summer. One camper, after three years, declared “it won’t ever get old.” Another camper told us: “My favorite camp I went to all summer and I went to five camps.” And we’re heard: “Best time ever!” more than once. So come paddle with us this summer! We promise our campers not only laughter, good times and new pals, but also new confidence and water skills that will serve them for years to come.
